Backer board is a substrate material for tile. Unlike plywood and other wood substrates that can warp, backer board is hard and flat, so it won’t buckle. Its stability allows you to adhere tile using a thinset mortar, making it relatively easy to create a tile surface that’s level and consistent.
All of this gives you a longer lasting project to hold the original beauty for ages.
Drywall, green-board, and other subpar materials can and will take on water over time. this will cause a whole new realm of home and health related problems. This is not the area to skimp on. Be sure your contractor is using backerboard, and nothing less for your tile project.
